Time to Collect
An exhibition opening private collections to the public and examining the collector’s role in the artistic process. It explores how collections are formed and how a private collection can become the foundation of a museum.
About the project
Time to Collect approaches the private collection as an intellectual and cultural project, rather than simply an accumulation of valuable objects. The collector appears as an active participant in artistic life, whose choices establish connections, preserve histories and shape ways of seeing.
The exhibition invited visitors to explore the contexts in which collections develop, the principles behind the selection of works and the ideas that hold a collection together. Its curatorial aim was to challenge the assumption that collecting belongs exclusively to a privileged social group and to make its possibilities more accessible.
The Museum of Odesa Modern Art provided a particularly relevant setting: its own history demonstrates how an institution can grow from a private collection. Works by Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Vasyl Yermilov, Zinaida Serebriakova and other artists opened a conversation about the relationship between individual commitment and a shared cultural space.
